Alguersuari never doubted
Despite the rumors suggesting his replacement by Ricciardo mid-season.
It has been understood for some time that only one of the current Toro Rosso drivers will still be part of the team next season. Some even believed that Daniel Ricciardo could be appointed to replace either Buemi or Alguersuari mid-season, which will apparently not happen since, since Silverstone, the third Toro Rosso driver is now racing for the HRT team.
Despite everything, Jaime Alguersuari declares that he was never worried about losing his F1 seat this season. Dominated by his Swiss teammate at the start of the season, the Spaniard has turned things around since Canada and now leads Buemi by a small point. Before that, it was indeed him who was in the hot seat within the small Scuderia.
« If I had known that I wasn’t doing my job properly, if I had known that I could do better, then I would have been worried. If I had made mistakes, had accidents, or wasn’t fast in the race, then it would have been different, but I knew there was something else, » explains the Spaniard to Autosport.
That something else was the understanding of Pirelli tires that Jaime Alguersuari found more difficult to grasp than his teammate did.
« Working on car settings and understanding the tires was just a matter of time. I’m not Rubens [Barrichello] or Fernando [Alonso] who have been there for several years and know everything. I’ve gotten used to F1 and it’s now completely different from last year. »
If his race performances have improved over the last few Grand Prix, Alguersuari is convinced that he can still make progress and that he will be even faster at the end of the season.
