Yuki Tsunoda will be penalized on the starting grid
The Japanese driver received new engine components for his AlphaTauri. Since they exceed the allowed limits according to the regulations, he will be penalized during the Grand Prix.
One thing is for sure, Yuki Tsunoda will start last. Even before the first free practice session of the Mexican Grand Prix, the Japanese driver knew his fate. His team installed new engine parts on his car.
He thus has a fifth engine, a fifth turbo, a fifth MGU-H, a fifth MGU-K, a third pair of batteries, and a third control unit. Already exceeding the regulation limit, Yuki Tsunoda received five penalty places for each part installed. He was therefore penalized by 30 places.
In addition to the engine components, his entire gearbox has been changed. That means the casing as well as the gears. Once again, not being compliant, he has incurred a 10-place penalty. Adding up to a total of 40.
Aston Martin has also installed a new gearbox for Fernando Alonso. Unlike his partner at AlphaTauri, the Spanish driver will not be penalized as he is still within the regulations, with a fourth gearbox for this season.
