Sunday: Missed opportunities for Kobayashi and Perez at Sauber
Big disappointment for the Swiss team as both C30 drivers were involved in race incidents causing damage and a penalty for Sergio Perez. After his collision with Lewis Hamilton, Kobayashi can also have regrets as he finished just outside the points. A race filled with missed opportunities for Peter Sauber.
Kamui Kobayashi – 12th
« Of course, I was hoping to score points today. My start was good and I had some great battles. I was slower than expected on the straights but I still don’t know why. It was also difficult to survive with the soft tires and I was under pressure from Vitaly Petrov.
Regarding the incident with Lewis Hamilton, which happened when I was in 4th place, I knew perfectly well that he was faster than me, so I had no reason to fight him. After he overtook me, I had no intention of retaking my position, so I stayed on my line and didn’t expect him to move over.
When I stopped on the second lap behind the safety car, I lost a terrible number of places. However, the long stint on medium tires at the end worked well, but then I was too far back to score points.
Sergio Perez – Retirement
« I am very disappointed. I got off to a good start and had a good beginning of the race. The car was very good and we should have scored points. On lap 5, I was 7th when Sebastien Buemi changed lines in front of me under braking, I tried to avoid him but, as I had lost downforce, I couldn’t. I then received a penalty which I served on lap 22. After that, I also made my second stop. I fell far behind and tried to catch up. I had just overtaken Bruno Senna when I felt something was seriously wrong at the back of the car, so I carefully brought it back to the pits and that was it for today. »
James Key, Technical Director
« It is a disappointing result after a relatively promising day yesterday, and the pace was not as good as it should have been, so we need to find out why. We could and should have scored points today, but for various reasons, it didn’t work out for us. […] We need to regroup and move forward for the next race. »
