Barrichello hopes for a new deal with Williams

Rubens Barrichello thinks Williams would be making a mistake if the team replaced him with a young paying driver next year.

The Brazilian hopes to secure a deal for next season, but sources suggest that Williams is considering the commercial benefits of signing a driver with sponsors backing him. Speculations are running high, with three drivers being mentioned: Adrian Sutil (Force India), Bruno Senna (LRGP), and GP2 driver Giedo van der Garde.

Barrichello stated that there has been no recent development regarding his future and that he is looking at other options in case Williams does not confirm him for 2012.

I have other options in Formula 1, and I have also spoken to other people. My feeling now is that despite the financial troubles of the team, they need to continue with what they have now: a very experienced and motivated driver with a young driver who is developing. Having two young drivers next year is a bad idea. I’m just waiting on my side, I can’t offer anything more.

The teammate of Rubens Barrichello, Pastor Maldonado is virtually guaranteed a seat at Williams, thanks to the lucrative partnership established between the team and the Venezuelan oil company PDVSA.

Barrichello believes he still has a lot to offer in Formula 1 and that he is not looking to continue simply to increase his number of Grand Prix starts.

You are in Formula 1 because you love it, because you love what you do. You feel competitive because you beat your teammate and you do a good job. If I have the chance to have a good car, I know I can win. Being here for 20 years just for the pleasure of being here, I’d rather stay at home. I still want to drive the fastest car, which is a Formula 1.
