Whitmarsh: “We must keep the historical circuits”

During a fan forum organized at the Woking factory, Martin Whitmarsh emphasized the importance for Formula 1 to preserve its historical circuits. As the F1 circus has just left Spa-Francorchamps and heads to Monza to end the European season, the McLaren team principal and FOTA president reaffirms his commitment to these tracks that have made and continue to make the history of the discipline.

« Going to Monza is always very evocative and historical, perhaps more so than any other circuit, you can feel the history of the sport and it has become the perfect place to close the European season. I think it is very important for F1 to keep its ‘classics’, which includes circuits like Spa, Silverstone, and Monaco, while also investing in new destinations in the future, » explains the McLaren team principal.

« It’s gratifying to know that even after 61 Grand Prix at Monza, the circuit still poses a real challenge. It’s a testament to the venue’s appeal and the competitiveness of Formula 1. »

The future of the Belgian Grand Prix is uncertain after 2012, which marks the end of the contract between the FOM and the Spa-Francorchamps circuit. The most likely solution would be an alternation with France starting in 2013. As for Silverstone, the circuit will host F1 until 2027.
