The triple Scottish world champion believes that the British driver is involved in too many unnecessary accidents and cannot hope to become a great driver if he does not reassess his mental management.

Stewart: « Hamilton must reflect on his mental management »

After Felipe Massa, who blamed him for not using his brain following their race clash, and after Alain Prost, who stated in L’Equipe that the British driver was wasting his incredible talent, it’s now Jackie Stewart’s turn to judge that Lewis Hamilton should question himself, in the columns of Autosport: “I am a bit confused because he certainly knows how to drive and has enormous natural talent, but if he wants to become a great driver, he cannot have a series of incidents. In fact, none of the great drivers have driven in this way.”

The triple Scottish world champion was particularly incredulous at the Englishman’s attempt to overtake Felipe Massa during the out-lap in qualifying: « He has the capabilities but, somehow, he mentally skips a gear, like during the Singapore qualifying, coming out of the pits. I can’t believe he almost had an accident that would have ended his qualifying session. The race incident was once again unnecessary, so I think he needs to work on his mental management. He has the skills and abilities, but unfortunately, he has too many accidents. »

Remarks that echo those made by the same Jackie Stewart last July: « To finish first, you must first finish and not keep crashing into others all the time. Lewis has too many accidents with too many drivers, and he cannot blame the stewards, because they are different at each race. »

The Scotsman does not hesitate to compare the McLaren driver to Michael Schumacher: « Michael had the same problem, but all the great drivers, the Fangios, Clarks, Laudas, myself, we didn’t have as many accidents. »
