Red Bull presents the RB8 designed by Adrian Newey

Expected like the white wolf, feared by its rivals, Red Bull unveiled on its website the new car for the reigning double world champion, Sebastian Vettel, and his teammate, Mark Webber: the RB8, straight from the drawing board of Adrian Newey.

After Helmut Marko’s statements this weekend, claiming that the RB8 would be less ugly than the Ferrari, all eyes naturally turned to the nose of the latest creation from Milton Keynes, which, like the vast majority of the cars presented so far, features a significant drop at the connection with the crash-box.

The solution devised by Red Bull’s engineers, however, stands out from those adopted by its rivals, as the nose of the RB8 features a rather distinct notch, likely aiming to enhance downforce on the front end while complying with new regulatory constraints regarding the height of the nose tip. Adrian Newey and his engineers have thus aimed to retain the advantage of a very clear space under the car to redirect the maximum aerodynamic flow to the rear, which a raised nose allowed.

Apart from that, in appearance, the RB8 remains faithful to the standards set by its predecessor, the RB7, with a very compact rear end to free up maximum space for airflow through the diffuser. As is customary, Adrian Newey has made subtle adjustments, such as further sculpting the sidepods.

Regarding the exhausts, which Red Bull, in collaboration with Renault, had revolutionized in their use over the past two seasons, the presentation video or the first released photos do not clearly show which approach the Austrian team has taken. This is causing a lot of speculation among observers and some bluffing from Red Bull’s rivals, notably McLaren, whose MP4-27 featured plastic exhausts during its presentation.
