Wurz returns to Williams F1

Alexander Wurz debuted in F1 in 1997 with the Benetton team. He raced for four seasons with this team before joining McLaren as a test driver from 2001 to 2005. He then decided to sign with the Williams F1 team for two seasons – in 2006 he served as a test and reserve driver, then in 2007 as a full-time driver.

More than four years after leaving the Formula 1 World Championship, Wurz is making his comeback – like Schumacher, Räikkönen, or Karthikeyan before him. But unlike these three men, the Austrian driver is not returning to drive an F1 car but to offer his advice.

He will help the Williams team, and notably the two drivers of the Grove team, Maldonado and Senna, throughout the season. He will even be present in Barcelona this week for the second session of winter testing to start his analysis.

« It’s a great initiative from Williams and it highlights how hard the team is working to optimize their performance. Throughout my sports career, which began at the age of 12 in BMW, and includes over a decade in Formula 1 and still continues (with Toyota in the World Endurance Championship), I’ve been fortunate to gain a lot of experience, » shared Alexander Wurz.

Wurz will therefore try to integrate within the Williams structure to attempt to set it back on the right track after a difficult 2011 season.

“I grew up in a family business of driver training and naturally, I enjoy helping my fellow athletes operate at their best. I look forward to using my expertise to help Williams in this important stage of its history,” added the Austrian driver.
