Prost talks about the French GP, Williams, and Senna

In an interview with the Russian website F1News.ru, Alain Prost, freshly appointed as a brand ambassador by Renault, comments on recent Formula One news, starting with the potential return of a French Grand Prix in 2013, alternating with its Belgian counterpart. In the not-so-distant past, the Frenchman had supported the project of organizing a French Grand Prix in Marne-La-Vallée with the backing of Lagardère and Eurodisney: « The chapter is closed. I really regret it because, believe me, it was the best project I had seen in a long time. »

However, most of the projects considered at the time were unable to succeed, for various reasons, so the native of the Loire now supports the possible alternation between the French and Belgian Grand Prix, considering that it is better than nothing: Obviously, the best thing would be for France and Belgium to each have their own Grand Prix every year, but unfortunately it must be acknowledged that Europe is facing great difficulties, so if this is the only way for the race to happen, then why not?

The former Williams driver also commented on the difficulties currently faced by the British team for which he won his last world championship title in 1993: “I often speak with Frank Williams and this winter I even tried to help him find some sponsors, but in vain,” reveals the Frenchman. “It’s difficult for them: as soon as you encounter financial troubles, it’s hard to get out of it.”

Thus, the men of Grove could not resist the allure of money brought by Bruno Senna’s sponsors, who was confirmed last January as the teammate of the already well-funded Pastor Maldonado. Ayrton’s nephew, who made a few standout performances last season with Lotus, is a topic of debate among regular F1 observers and commentators. Symbolic rival of *Magic*, Alain Prost refused to make any sporting judgment on Bruno Senna: “Bruno is a great person and I sincerely mean it. I cannot judge his skills as a driver yet because it’s still premature, but he is a good person.”

The Professor also confessed to the Russian site that he did not want to see the film Senna, released at the end of 2010 and since praised by critics: « I haven’t seen it and I don’t want to see it. I definitely do not agree with their vision of things. I spent a lot of time trying to explain to them that they were wrong » explains the Frenchman, who criticizes the documentary directed by Asif Kapadia for giving him, along with Jean-Marie Balestre, the wrong role.

Regarding current Formula One, the former Renault, McLaren, Ferrari, and Williams driver believes it is absolutely impossible for the new teams, HRT, Marussia, and Caterham, to break the hegemony of the current Top 5 in the discipline: In all honesty, I would say they cannot become competitive in today’s Formula One. It’s impossible! They can make progress, but, obviously, the question of the goal they are pursuing must quickly be addressed. If it’s about breaking into the Top 5 of the discipline with a new team, it is absolutely impossible.

The four-time world champion from France knows what he’s talking about, having seen his eponymous team’s project, following the acquisition of Ligier in 1997, end in liquidation four years later.
