Cristina Fernandes announced that a three-year contract is about to be signed and the race will be organized starting in November 2013, probably before or after the Brazilian Grand Prix. Argentina has already hosted Formula 1 20 times between 1953 and 1998, each time in Buenos Aires, but for the country’s return to the calendar, it will be the seaside venue that is played. The new circuit will indeed be built in the seaside resort of Mar del Plata, located 400 kilometers from the capital.
« For us, it will be very important because, after football, car racing is the second favorite sport of Argentinians. Having Formula 1 back in Argentina is something we deserve to be able to show what we have, » states Cristina Fernandes.
The last Argentine Grand Prix took place in 1998, and it was Michael Schumacher who won ahead of Hakkinen and Irvine. It was the only victory for the German in this country. The person who achieved the most success in Argentina is none other than Juan Manuel Fangio, who won the race in ’54, ’55, ’56, and ’57.
