Friday: Toro Rosso drivers learn fast
This first day of the Malaysian weekend took place in dry conditions, contrary to what the weather had led people to fear. The two Toro Rosso drivers were therefore able to get their bearings on a dry track. Ricciardo had already driven here in Formula BMW, while Vergne had spent a lot of time in the Red Bull simulator, but the facilities in Milton Keynes do not yet simulate the climate that prevails in Sepang.
Daniel Ricciardo – 18th and 5th
« I have already raced here in Formula BMW, but when you move to a Formula 1 car, your reference points go out the window. But at the same time, it helps to have some initial experience on the track. The work in the simulator was probably useful. »
The track is quite technical and I think we made a good step forward this afternoon compared to this morning which was difficult. The majority of our work has been focused on adapting the car to the different characteristics of the track compared to Melbourne, and the biggest difference comes from the temperature. The tires work harder in these conditions and having the right balance is crucial.
Jean-Eric Vergne – 16th and 8th
Since last year I have driven a lot in the simulator, but they didn’t set the temperature to the maximum in Milton Keynes. Overall, I think the day went well for us, I had a solid long stint this afternoon, and my pace was good. Daniel’s time shows that we have a good car. I am relatively confident and happy with how things are going. Obviously, I am facing heat and humidity for the first time, but I expect to get used to it as the weekend goes on, so I have no concerns about the race from a physical standpoint.
