The French team DAMS in F1 from 2013!
A French team in F1 in 2013, did you dream of it? The FIA made it happen, the governing body of F1 has indeed decided to grant the 13th license to team DAMS.
In 2009, the FIA decided to change the regulation on the maximum number of teams allowed to participate in the Formula 1 World Championship. This limit increased from 10 to 13, but with the failure of the US F1 team, only 12 teams have been present in Formula 1 since 2010.
But according to our information, a 13th team should be registered for the Formula 1 World Championship as early as next season. And hooray, it will be a French team, specifically the DAMS team, based in Ruaudin near Le Mans and currently competing in the GP2 Series and the World Series by Renault this year.
After the arrival of three French drivers in F1 at the start of the season, the prospect of the French Grand Prix returning to the calendar in the coming years, and the reappearance of a French team in F1 prove the strong comeback of France in the world’s most prestigious motor racing championship.
After a 2011 season marked notably by the team title in GP2 Asia and the driver titles of Romain Grosjean in GP2 Asia and GP2 Series, as well as the team title in Auto GP, the DAMS team decided to aim higher for 2012 by participating in the Formula 3.5 championship of the World Series by Renault. For 2013, the team from Le Mans aims even higher as it will be in F1, so 2012 will serve to prepare for its entry into the Formula 1 World Championship.
“We are delighted to have been chosen by the FIA to participate in the 2013 FIA Formula 1 World Championship. We have tried in the past to race in F1, but it could not materialize. Now, with our recent titles in Auto GP and GP2 Series, we have proven our worth, and we are confident that we are ready to take on the world of F1 in a few months,” said Jean-Paul Driot, the head of the DAMS team.
As stated by Jean-Paul Driot, the French team had already attempted to compete in F1 in 1996; they had even built a single-seater in 1995, but due to a lack of budget, the venture could not be completed. However, this time, to succeed in its challenge, the team has managed to partner with significant financial backers, including Total, which has already been supporting the team for several seasons now.
