Alguersuari unsure if he can return in 2013
Jaime Alguersuari is considering a return to F1 in 2013, but the Spanish driver acknowledges that for the moment nothing is certain.
Jaime Alguersuari was not retained by the Toro Rosso team at the end of 2011, and the young Spaniard, a pure Red Bull product until then, was announced with Mercedes or McLaren as a reserve driver. But he ultimately decided to join BBC Radio 5 Live as a commentator and, more importantly, the Pirelli manufacturer to lead the testing of the 2013 tires aboard the R30.
Alguersuari hopes that this experience will allow him to secure a full-time seat in F1 for the 2013 season, but for now, the former Toro Rosso driver doesn’t yet know what his future holds.
Everyone knows my desire to return to competition. Honestly, at the moment, I don’t know where I’ll be in 2013. If I can’t race (in F1) next year, then I’ll try to continue living my life somewhere that makes me happy, Alguersuari told AS.
The role of Pirelli test driver can be an interesting stepping stone for returning to F1, as demonstrated by Pedro de la Rosa, Nick Heidfeld, and Romain Grosjean. However, working with Pirelli is not necessarily a guarantee of returning to F1, as shown by the case of Lucas di Grassi.
