Webber at Ferrari, it’s done!
According to El Confidencial, Mark Webber is reportedly assured to become Fernando Alonso's future teammate at Ferrari starting in 2013, even if no contract has been signed yet.
Last February, Alan Jones believed, according to GMM, that there could be an opening for Mark Webber at Ferrari if Felipe Massa were to leave.
Indeed, just like the Brazilian driver, Mark Webber is only contracted with his team until the end of the current season, and his future with Red Bull seems uncertain, as Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne, currently with Toro Rosso, are knocking on the door of the Austrian team. Felipe Massa’s poor start to the season would have sealed the fate of the Paulista at Ferrari and, although Sergio Perez has been considered the favorite in recent weeks, Mark Webber is actually the best-positioned driver to support Fernando Alonso in 2013.
According to a source deemed reliable by the Spanish newspaper El Confidencial, it’s a done deal for the Australian, even though no contract has reportedly been signed at the moment. Regularly finishing in fourth and currently third in the World Championship standings, Mark Webber would have benefited from the support of Fernando Alonso, the undisputed leader of Scuderia Ferrari, with whom he maintains a special relationship, both having had Flavio Briatore as their manager.
Sergio Perez’s future with Ferrari would not be called into question but only postponed, giving him time to gain more experience before taking on a role with responsibilities at Ferrari. Meanwhile, the men of Maranello would benefit from the experience of the Queanbeyan native, who will celebrate his 36th birthday next August, which is much needed at Ferrari in current times.
Update: On Twitter, the Italian team denies when asked if there is any truth behind this rumor: « No, nothing, nada, niente… »
