Saturday: Caterham and Kovalainen hoped to enter Q2
Heikki Kovalainen and Vitaly Petrov hoped to fight for a spot in Q2, but traffic for the Finn and a KERS problem for the Russian dashed their hopes. The two men are 18th and 19th on the grid, and they hope to take advantage of every opportunity tomorrow to climb up the hierarchy.
Heikki Kovalainen – 17th and 18th (17th on the grid)
« It was a good session for me. I had a good balance all weekend and came into this session knowing I could push. I told my engineer before qualifying that I thought I could be in Q2 and we were close – if I hadn’t had that Marussia slowing me down in the last sector we could have been there, but it doesn’t matter, it happens in Monaco.
Here, I think that tomorrow, we should have the car to fight with the cars ahead throughout the race. So far this season, we’ve been able to stay with them for most of the first two stints, but because the lap is shorter here, we would like to battle with them throughout the race. Whether it rains or it’s dry or in between, it doesn’t matter to me – whatever comes, I’m looking forward to it.
Vitaly Petrov – 19th and 19th (18th on the grid)
« It was pretty good – the car felt good every time we were on track and I think we overall got the maximum today. We had an issue with the KERS this morning so we had to disable it for qualifying, which obviously cost me a bit of time, but we worked and pushed as much as possible in Q1 so it worked as well as we hoped.
The red flag obviously disrupted everyone, and even if I managed to do a lap before, it wasn’t a fast one. When I went back out, the second set of tires didn’t seem as good, but overall it’s been a positive weekend so far. Tomorrow will be exciting, and I can’t wait. We’ve already seen that people can make mistakes here, so we need to make sure we can take advantage if it happens on track and fight until the checkered flag.
