Button: We must not forget what Schumacher did in the past
Button is not too harsh on Schumacher, who was widely criticized following his return in 2010. But in Monaco, he proved that he still has what it takes and that he can occasionally compete with the young drivers who now dominate the discipline.
There are topics that continue to spark debate in the paddocks. Among these is the return of Michael Schumacher. Everyone has an opinion on the matter, and many share it. In Monaco, Michael Schumacher seemed to put everyone in agreement by setting the fastest qualifying time. Ironically, the German couldn’t benefit from this truly significant achievement since his return in 2010. His collision with Bruno Senna in Spain earned him a 5-place penalty, starting from 6th position on Sunday.
Nevertheless, this ‘pole’ brought back smiles to the fans of the seven-time world champion who might have started to despair a little. But perhaps we were expecting too much, too soon. That’s what Jenson Button seems to think.
« Michael has faced a lot of criticism since he returned. I think we’ve forgotten what he accomplished in his first career, » explains the McLaren driver.
« Sometimes, it takes time to feel comfortable with the car as well as with the people you work with. But I think he did a very good job, he made no mistakes and he really deserved it, » says Button.
This first pole of what he likes to call his second career must have given Schumacher mixed feelings, as he had been waiting for such a result for some time.
« I’m sure that when he got out of the car he was very happy but also disappointed to be relegated to sixth position on a track like Monaco, » adds the 2009 world champion.
This frustration could be erased by a good result in Canada, where Mercedes should be capable of playing a leading role, at least in qualifying, well-assisted by its W-Duct.
