Pérez must be less aggressive
Aggressive is not necessarily the first word that comes to mind when mentioning Sergio Pérez. However, according to the head of the Ferrari Driver Academy, it's in this area that the young Mexican driver needs to work to score points more regularly.
Sergio Pérez is once again at the center of many conversations following his podium in Montreal. However, if we look at the world championship standings, it is noted that the Mexican hadn’t scored any points since Malaysia and his first podium in F1.
With three 11th places and a retirement in Spain, the overall performance is not catastrophic. Nevertheless, Luca Baldisserri, head of the Ferrari Driver Academy (FDA), believes that Pérez could have done better in these Grand Prix.
« After Monaco, we had a discussion with Sergio. We wanted to understand why the recent results did not meet the expectations raised after the Malaysian Grand Prix. Pérez is undeniably talented, but he is often too aggressive, which, particularly in Formula 1, does not allow for achieving results, » analyzes Baldisserri.
In Montreal, Pérez once again scored points, and in a very impressive manner as he was in third place when he crossed the finish line. For Ferrari, this result was possible because the Sauber driver learned to control his aggressiveness.
« The Montreal race was a great response [to the Monaco discussion]. A race in which Sergio not only drove at a good pace but also managed his race by staying on track for 50 laps with the same tires.
Enough to convince Luca di Montezemolo to hand him the wheel of the second Ferrari in 2013? The answer will come in a few weeks or months.
