Thailand would like to emulate some of its Asian neighbors, starting with Malaysia, by organizing a Formula 1 Grand Prix. Discussions have reportedly been ongoing for several months already, particularly with Bernie Ecclestone. The goal would be to organize the first Thailand Formula 1 Grand Prix in 2014.

In any case, this is what Kanokphand Chulakasem, the equivalent of the Thai sports minister, said, as quoted by Phuket News: « Our discussions with Bernie Ecclestone went well. We expect to have the rights to host a Grand Prix from 2014. »

The timeframe may seem short, but Thailand is currently considering hosting this Grand Prix on a track designed through the streets of Bangkok, the capital, which would eliminate the need to build a circuit and would also reduce costs.

In anticipation of a Formula 1 Grand Prix, Thailand will host the Race of Champions in December of this year. Several current or former Formula 1 drivers are expected to attend: Sebastian Vettel has confirmed that he will be present, notably to defend his team title won in Düsseldorf alongside Michael Schumacher.
