Horner and Stewart want Webber to stay with Red Bull in 2013

On the evening of his victory at the British Grand Prix, Mark Webber, who is now positioning himself as a title contender, believes his recent wins more or less guarantee him a place in Formula One beyond his contract with Red Bull, which ends at the conclusion of the current season: « It helps me to stay in Formula One. I am pushing for a contract for next year. I have to race reasonably well, score some points, secure a few wins, and I will work very hard to stay in Formula One next year, » the Australian confides to journalists present at Silverstone.

To be honest, despite his 35 years and a somewhat disappointing 2011 season, the question was never whether the Queanbeyan native would be in Formula One but rather with whom. For several months, persistent rumors have linked him to Maranello, replacing Felipe Massa. However, for some, even though he would find a prestigious team in Ferrari to end his career, he would mainly be alongside a certain Fernando Alonso, who, while friends with the Australian, does not have a reputation for sharing his territory: « If Mark goes there, the team will always favor Fernando Alonso. So for Mark, why should he change teams if he is currently in a position to win? » wonders Jackie Stewart in an interview with Crash.net, where he also considers the Australian to be, along with Alonso, one of the best drivers on the grid.

For the triple World Champion from Scotland, Mark Webber would be better off staying with Red Bull, which would not displease Christian Horner: « I think, very simply, we have a great relationship with Mark. As always with him, things are quite straightforward. It’s his seventh season with the team. He has had all his success in Formula One with this team and we would like that to continue. Inevitably, there is a lot of speculation surrounding Ferrari, but we are only focused on ourselves. We cannot control what others say or do, but I think Mark feels comfortable within the team. »

The director of the Austrian team does not doubt that the winner of the British Grand Prix will find his happiness in Milton Keynes: « Mark has given me all the signs that he is very happy here and you can see it in his driving. He is driving very well this year. He has won two major races so far, the Monaco Grand Prix and the British Grand Prix, and I think his driving at Silverstone was excellent. It was great for him to win for the team’s home race […]. »

The great Mark could therefore extend his stay at Red Bull and has reportedly expressed the desire to do so according to Christian Horner, who announces that although the time for discussions has not yet come, a decision should not be long in coming: « Mark wants to be in the team next year and, as we have always said, we will sit down to discuss the future this summer. That time is approaching, so over the next few weeks, we will discuss 2013. »
