Hamilton hopes to have his future settled during the break
The contract binding Lewis Hamilton to the McLaren team will expire at the end of the 2012 season. Still uncertain about his future after 2012, the British driver hopes to be settled in the coming weeks.
The rumors of a possible transfer of Lewis Hamilton from McLaren to Ferrari, McLaren to Red Bull, or even McLaren to Mercedes have persisted in recent weeks following the challenges faced by the Briton during the recent Grand Prix races.
If discussions have been mentioned with Lotus recently, Martin Whitmarsh, the McLaren team director, hopes to see his protégé extend his stay with the Woking team: « No, I think he’s smarter than that (leaving the team because of its issues). He must want to stay with this team, and I believe that’s the case. »
The main person concerned, on his part, confided that for the moment, no discussion had been initiated but he told the Russian news agency R-Sport that he hopes his situation will be clarified after the summer break: « We haven’t seen each other yet, we haven’t discussed anything, but I’m convinced that it will be done at the end of the summer break, when we have this break, it would be good for something to be put in place. It’s a time when we can be more relaxed and make good decisions for the future.»
The 2008 world champion also stated that the current form of his team would not necessarily be a determining factor in his decision: Half a year cannot decide 6 years of partnership, or rather 13. I have been with them since I was 13, so it’s been 14 years, therefore it’s much more than a matter of small details; it’s a much broader perspective. There are many things to consider. These people support me; they are the ones who enabled me to get into Formula 1.
Lewis Hamilton also shared that the sporting aspect was important to him because he wants to have a car capable of winning: “But you know, I want to win. I’m not so young anymore, and I want to make sure that whatever I do, I make the right decision so I can maximize my career. I need to make sure I can win. That’s what I live for, that’s why I train and work every day.”
