Ross Brawn compares F1 to fishing
Ross Brawn shares his opinion on the first half of the season and the continuation of events. The Englishman regrets that the Grand Prix were too unpredictable before the break, considering it not good for the audience, and even makes a small analogy with fishing to support his argument.
After a two-week shutdown, the Formula 1 factories have reopened, and it is now time to turn towards the upcoming Grand Prix and the second half of the 2012 championship.
For Ross Brawn, whose Mercedes team won its first Grand Prix since its official return as a full-fledged team, it is important that the next nine races deliver a less random result.
« For F1, we need to ensure that the ‘random’ factor is not too significant. I believe there have been some unlikely events this year, and it has been exciting, but I think this excitement will decrease if it continues in this way, » estimates the Briton.
Brawn, a great fishing enthusiast, continues his reasoning by referring to his favorite hobby: « There’s a funny analogy with fishing. I was thinking about it the other day. The great thing about fishing is that a beginner can come along and succeed in catching a fish because there’s an element of uncertainty. That’s what makes it fun for the participants but doesn’t make it a very good spectator sport. »
It is true that while some were delighted to see a new winner at each race, others regretted not seeing a clear hierarchy emerge. The main cause of what some observers called a lottery comes from the Pirelli tires, whose optimal usage window is particularly narrow. But for Brawn, the problem should be less significant for the upcoming races of the season.
« In a certain way, things seem to be getting better but the difference you have in the same team with two drivers is quite curious. One weekend with Red Bull you have Mark Webber dominating and the next weekend, it’s Sebastian Vettel and nobody really knows why.
The Mercedes team is probably one of the teams that struggles the most to make the best use of the Italian tires, and the performance of the W03 is affected by it. The management of the German brand also met on Monday to discuss the future of the brand in F1 as a full-fledged constructor. For now, no official information has been released, but it seems that Mercedes could revert to being an engine supplier only in the near future, either in 2013 or 2014.
