Saturday: Usual positions for the Caterham drivers
Heikki Kovalainen experienced some issues today during Free Practice 3 and in qualifying with his DRS, but the Finnish driver still managed a good lap that places him in his usual position on the grid. The same observation goes for Vitaly Petrov, who believes he extracted the maximum from the CT01.
Heikki Kovalainen – 18th and 19th [18th after Rosberg’s penalty]:
« It was a somewhat complicated day. During Free Practice 3, the car was very understeery at the start, but we managed to fix the issue by the end of the session. Once Free Practice 3 was over, the car seemed good but I had problems with the DRS, which obviously cost me lap time. During qualifying, I encountered traffic on my first run and couldn’t go as fast as I wanted on my out lap. The tires were not fully up to temperature, leaving me with only one lap on that run to set a time, but the tires were not where we were hoping, and I couldn’t put together a very good lap.
In the second stint, my out lap was much better, but I again encountered issues with the DRS. The guys worked very hard to fix it, but it still struggled to open and I could feel it in the car. As soon as I pressed the button, I could feel that it didn’t activate fully and on a circuit like Spa, that costs time. In the end, the last lap puts me in a usual position and it’s a good performance on our part.
Vitaly Petrov – 21st and 20th [19th after Rosberg’s penalty]:
I had a good qualifying session and I’m thrilled to have had a clear last lap as the session was ending. In my first stint in qualifying, I encountered a lot of traffic, which may have cost me some time, but I think I extracted the maximum from the car today, so for me, that’s good. Tomorrow’s race should be dry, but even with a clear track, there are always surprises at Spa, so I want to make sure I have a good race and can seize every opportunity based on what happens ahead.
