Robert Kubica still dreams of F1
Robert Kubica, who had an accident over a year ago during a rally event in Italy, will return to competition in the same discipline this weekend, again in Italy. On this occasion, he spoke with the channel SkySport24 and discussed his short-term and long-term future.
Silent since his rally accident in February 2011, Robert Kubica has finally broken his long silence on the Italian channel SkySport24. Recently, Fernando Alonso suggested that it was difficult to say if Robert Kubica could ever return to Formula 1. The Pole admitted that the top category of motorsport remains his goal for the future.
A few weeks ago, the former Renault driver was back behind the wheel of a Ford WRC for asphalt tests. This weekend, he will be competing with a Subaru in the Ronde Gomitolo di Lana Rally in Italy.
Obviously, I would have preferred to come back elsewhere, but this is a more active phase of my rehabilitation program.
The hope is to be able to return to where I was before [in F1], and that’s already a great goal for me. But being here in Biella is already emotional after more than 20 difficult months, explains the Polish driver to the Italian channel.
This test will be a real challenge for the individual who won the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix, a year after being involved in a serious accident there. « Having been a driver for 20 years, my body is accustomed to certain things, and I can only feel them when I drive, so we shall see. »
Seeing the Polish driver involved in a car race again will undoubtedly delight his many fans who hope that he will soon return to the starting grids of the Grand Prix. However, although things are heading in the right direction, Kubica still does not set a deadline for returning to the F1 paddocks. “I haven’t given myself any percentage or deadline. As I said, I am happy to be here. Sometimes in life, you have to be content with less than you would really like, and that’s the case now. However, I am happy to be here, and I think it’s a great goal,” emphasizes Robert Kubica.
What is certain is that he will not be in F1 next season, but the driver intends to return to full-time sports activity before considering a return to the cockpit of a Formula 1 single-seater, perhaps in 2014.
« Obviously I will do my best to have a full-time activity next year. I will decide what I will do in the coming months because I have done different track tests with very high-performance cars but I need to choose for myself what I am going to do, what I will like the most and see if the F1 goal is achievable or not. What I will do next year will be with a long-term view, maybe 2014, but honestly, I am not thinking about that. »
