Di Montezemolo motivates his team for the end of the season
With only 4 points separating Alonso and Vettel, the championship is now well and truly back on, and the Scuderia will have to almost start from scratch after having built a small advantage since Valencia last June. The battle promises to be tight and nothing can be left to chance to win.
Since the restart, the championship no longer seems to be working in favor of Ferrari and its number one driver, Fernando Alonso. In four races, the Spaniard has been forced to retire twice, and in Italy, he could have aimed for a better result without the reliability issues encountered in the last part of the qualifiers.
With five Grand Prix remaining in the season, Alonso’s advantage over Vettel is now just four small points, in other words, nothing. After the finish yesterday, the Ferrari driver believed that the end of the season would resemble a mini championship. The margin for error no longer exists for either Alonso or Vettel.
Luca di Montezemolo is well aware that the battle will be tight and that every detail will count to clinch the world title, so he encourages his team not to give up until the end. « It’s in moments like these that I want to see the Scuderia Ferrari I know. A focused team that controls its nerves. I will talk to Fernando on the phone soon to give him even more motivation to approach these last five races with a fighting spirit, which I hope the whole team will do. I expect a tremendous effort from our engineers, who have already proven they are capable. We are aware that this championship is still within our reach, » explains di Montezemolo on the official site of the Italian team.
Luca di Montezemolo takes the opportunity to remind that the points lost by Alonso both in Spa and Suzuka were due to the Asturian driver’s opponents: « We know that we can count on the best current driver and it is solely the mistakes of others in Spa and again in Suzuka that deprive us of a more comfortable lead over our rivals. »
In any case, the end of the season will not lack interest, and Montezemolo remains optimistic about its outcome in a little over a month. « In sports as in life, the wheel turns, and we must not forget that. Recently it hasn’t gone positively for us, but it doesn’t take much for that to change. »
As Alonso liked to repeat before the season opener when many observers were predicting a particularly challenging start for the Scuderia, “It’s in November that we count the points.”
