Vergne returns to where he started with Toro Rosso
The Korean Grand Prix holds a special significance for Jean-Eric Vergne, as it was there that he made his official debut behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car last year.
A year ago, Jean-Eric Vergne took the wheel of the Toro Rosso for the first time during a Grand Prix weekend, during Free Practice 1 of the 2011 Korean Grand Prix. The Frenchman had little track time due to heavy rain, but he enjoyed the experience and is happy to return to this track: « It’s a place where I have good memories. It was a year ago at the Korea International Circuit that I made my Grand Prix debut, driving in free practice for Toro Rosso, even though it was raining heavily that day and practically no one left the garages during the first hour of the session. In the end, I think I had five laps and had to be very careful with the car. But, it was a good start and now I am here as a full-time race driver. »
After a complicated Japanese weekend, including a penalty for hindering Senna during qualifying and finishing 13th in Suzuka, out of the points, JEV hopes to bounce back on the South Korean track. His goal will be to fight for points: « I think I’ve matured a lot over the past year and I’ve learned a lot too. It’s nice to return to the Yeongam circuit and apply the lessons learned. Japan may have been a tough race, but I have good feelings about Korea and I think we will have a chance to compete for points. »
