The Hungaroring hopes to host F1 beyond 2016
The officials of the Hungaroring circuit hope to quickly sign a contract extension to host the Hungarian Grand Prix, which could be extended for an additional 5 years, until 2021.
While the trend in Formula 1 is to visit new countries, in Europe, the officials of the Hungaroring circuit hope to extend their association with Formula 1. The current contract binding the circuit to host the Hungarian Grand Prix will expire in 2016, but Zsolt Gyulay, the head of Hungaroring, would like to extend this mandate by an additional five years.
« I think we have a good chance of being one of the European circuits that will remain on the calendar. I must say, however, that we need to find the right level of investment because the circuit is already very frequently used, » he confides, as quoted by Sport1.de.
The Hungaroring has been hosting Formula 1 during the Hungarian Grand Prix since 1986, and the Hungarian track hosts other major events, such as a meeting of the World Series by Renault since 2007, a round of the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) since 2011, as well as several national championships.
According to the German site, discussions between circuit officials, the Grand Prix promoters, and Bernie Ecclestone, the commercial rights manager of Formula 1, could begin in early November, which is just over a week after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Zsolt Gyulay’s goal would be to ensure that the Hungaroring hosts F1 at least until 2021.
