No more Formula 1 at the Nurburgring?
The Nurburgring circuit is facing serious financial problems and the track could permanently say goodbye to Formula 1, while also jeopardizing the presence of the German Grand Prix on the 2013 calendar.
Since 2008, the German Grand Prix has been alternately organized by the Hockenheim and Nurburgring circuits. Hockenheim hosted F1 in 2008, 2010, and 2012, while the Nurburgring hosted it in 2009 and 2011, and the latter is therefore supposed to host the 2013 Formula 1 German Grand Prix.
But for several months now, information has appeared in the press about financial problems with the circuit located in the west of Germany. Four months ago, it was the specter of bankruptcy that was mentioned. There have indeed been announcements since then proposing financing to continue hosting Formula 1, but nothing sufficient a priori.
Indeed, according to several German newspapers, negotiations between the circuit officials and the debt repayment managers have ceased. A spokesperson for the circuit also confirmed to the German news agency DPA that there would be no more Formula 1 since the discussions with Bernie Ecclestone have also failed.
This could therefore jeopardize the presence of the German Grand Prix in 2013, even if a solution remains possible, with the race being hosted solely by the Hockenheim circuit, a solution that had already been considered by Bernie Ecclestone in mid-July of this year.
