The F1 rankings after the last Grand Prix 2023: Mercedes P2, Alonso ahead of Leclerc in a photo finish
Here it is, it's over... the F1 season came to an end this Sunday on the Yas Marina circuit: the opportunity to take a final look at the evolution of the standings and the last battles at the end of the 2023 season.
Mercedes maintains its second place in the constructor championship
It was one of the stakes of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the battle for the runner-up position behind Red Bull in the constructor’s standings. Ferrari had a 4-point deficit to Mercedes before the weekend. In the end, Charles Leclerc’s second place was not enough, as George Russell also claimed a fantastic podium by finishing third. As for their two teammates who started at the back of the grid (11th and 16th), Hamilton managed to secure 2 points with a 9th-place finish, while Carlos Sainz couldn’t successfully make his way up the pack. Ferrari finished the year just 3 points behind the German team.
At the bottom of the hierarchy, despite Yuki Tsunoda’s impressive race (8th place and voted driver of the day), no changes are to be reported: Williams wins the battle of the backmarkers, ahead of AlphaTauri, Alfa Romeo, and Haas.
In the middle of the standing, McLaren confirms its end-of-season momentum, maintaining a 22-point lead over Aston Martin to hold onto 4th place in the championship. Alone in the middle of the pack, Alpine finishes its season in 6th place.
In the driver standings, a fierce battle for fourth place.
Before the Grand Prix, there were 4 contenders for the 4th place. Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso had 200 points each, Lando Norris had 195 points, and Charles Leclerc had 188 points.
In this game, the Monegasque managed to hold his own. He came back to finish tied for 4th place with Fernando Alonso!
However, in case of a tie, it is the number of victories, then the number of second places, and finally the number of third places that determine the ranking of the drivers. Neither of them has any victories this year and they have finished second three times. They are therefore differentiated by their number of third places: the Spaniard has 5, compared to 3 for the Ferrari driver. Thus, Fernando Alonso finishes the season in fourth place.
Lando Norris remains in 6th place, while Carlos Sainz is the big loser of the day, dropping to 7th position.
No changes on the French drivers’ side, Pierre Gasly stays ahead of Esteban Ocon by 4 points: neither of them managed to score any points this Sunday.
Max Verstappen finishes this season with a record number of points: 575 out of a possible 620!
