Luca di Montezemolo abandons his political ambitions and remains at the head of Ferrari

Luca di Montezemolo put an end to his clearly stated political ambitions of recent years. President of Ferrari since 1991, he created the think tank Italia Futura in 2009 with the aim of running and winning a seat in the Italian Parliament during the general elections scheduled for this year.

He further specifies that he will support the candidacy of the current Prime Minister, Mario Monti, who is running for a second term. Regarding this, he states to the Italian newspaper La Republicca: “I will not run for any seat. I will make way for quality people who have worked hard for the association in recent years. It is normal that they become the main actors.”

Italian media had raised the fact that there could have been a conflict of interest for Luca di Montezemolo if he managed to have an important role in the Italian government, given his role as President of Ferrari. A resignation from his current position was then considered.

The Ferrari family is therefore assured of keeping its current President, even if he nonetheless wishes to maintain a less important role within the think tank he himself created: « Italia Futura is about to transform into something much broader and more diverse, and I will not be the leader of that. Obviously, it will be a political home for me, for tens of thousands of collaborators in the association, and for millions of voters who will choose it. I will support Italia Futura with determination before and after the elections, but in a position that will not lead to suspicions of conflicts of interest. »
