Scorpion Racing: “A bit too late” for 2013 according to Ecclestone
Bernie Ecclestone reacted to recent statements regarding the introduction of a new team for the 2013 season. According to him, no spots are available for the coming year.
We learned yesterday that a consortium of North American investors is about to purchase the assets of the HRT team to launch a new team under the name Scorpion Racing.
This acquisition should be effective very quickly, and an announcement is expected by the end of the week to clarify the uncertainties still surrounding this project, which some might call far-fetched.
However, Bernie Ecclestone admits to having been in contact with the interested parties and would not be opposed to welcoming them into the Formula 1 World Championship: « I spoke with them, and I told them to get in touch with the FIA to apply for registration. »
However, registrations for the world championship /f1/actualite/14902-hrt-pourrait-revivre-sous-le-nom-de-scorpion-racing-des-2013.html have been closed since last November. This leads Ecclestone to say that this project is unlikely to come to fruition before 2014: « They want to buy all the assets of the HRT team, then create a company and register for the championship this year. But I don’t think that’s going to happen. It’s a bit too late now. But maybe they could do it for next year. »
With the recent success of the brand new United States Grand Prix in Austin, Bernie Ecclestone would not be opposed to his long-time dream of welcoming an American team in Formula 1 becoming a reality. Especially after the failure of USF1, which was supposed to be the fourth new team on the starting grids in 2010 alongside HRT, Virgin (now Marussia), and Team Lotus (now Caterham).
