FIA: Telemetry issues still present in Sepang
As there was a week ago in Melbourne, Australia, the FIA is encountering telemetry issues between race control and the Formula 1 cars in Sepang.
Last week in Melbourne, the FIA had communicated about telemetry issues affecting the race direction, and while everyone in the paddock, starting with the FIA, hoped that all of this would be resolved this weekend for the second round of the Formula 1 season, it is clear that this is not the case.
The FIA thus issued a statement yesterday explaining that the problems encountered in Melbourne were still present in Sepang this weekend and that, as a result, it decided, like last weekend, to deactivate the telemetry system linking race control to the cars. According to Autosport, this could be due to the change of system supplier implemented this year.
As in Melbourne, drivers will not have the yellow, red, and blue flag reminders on their steering wheel. They will have to manually activate the Safety Car mode when it enters the track, and race control, in the event of a yellow flag or poor weather conditions, will not be able to deactivate and then reactivate the DRS; it will be up to the drivers not to use it.
Everything went well despite these constraints last week in Australia, so let’s hope it will be the same tomorrow for the Malaysian Grand Prix.
