Renault will power the single-seaters in the Formula E championship

Renault has been involved in Formula 1 for many years, but for some time now, the French manufacturer has begun to focus its strategy on electric vehicles, with its Zero Emission range, which includes the Zoé and the Twizy.

The brand with the diamond logo has thus decided to become a partner of the championship that allows it to combine these two elements, motorsport and electric, the FIA Formula E championship. Renault will collaborate with Spark Racing Technology, led by Frédéric Vasseur – who is one of the founders of the ART Grand Prix team – to supply electric engine units for this new championship.

« Renault has demonstrated a unique commitment to zero-emission mobility, with a range of 4 cars available for sale. Renault in Europe and the Renault-Nissan Alliance worldwide have together achieved a leading sales position in the electric vehicle market. Formula E is a great opportunity to demonstrate the excellence and reliability of our EV solutions. We believe that motorsport is an excellent way to promote the efficiency of new technologies, and we are eager to use this race car in the FIA Formula E Championship to demonstrate that our technology is the best, » stated Philippe Klein, Executive Vice President and Chief Planning Officer, Product and Programs of the Renault group, in the press release issued by Renault.

Alejandro Agag, CEO of Formula E Holdings and promoter of the Formula E championship, expressed delight at the announcement of this partnership with a manufacturer as significant as Renault: « Renault and Formula E share the same commitment to innovative technologies, and we are thrilled to welcome them to the Championship as a founding partner. Renault is not only one of the global leaders in automotive manufacturing with a significant sporting record, but also a pioneer in electric vehicles with a complete range of zero-emission vehicles. Having a manufacturer of this caliber by our side is a great asset in this time of growing interest in the FIA Formula E Championship. »

The Formula E championship has also recently welcomed another high-profile partner, Tag Heuer, which has been chosen to be the official timekeeper, the official watch, and the official chronograph. The Swiss watchmaking company has also become one of the official partners of the Formula E championship alongside Michelin and Renault.

As a reminder, the first season of Formula E is set to take place next year, in 2014, with an initial schedule of 10 races. At the moment, the official calendar has not been published, but a first version has been unveiled, and this electric single-seater championship is expected to stop in Los Angeles, Miami, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, London, Rome, Shanghai, Putrajaya in Malaysia, as well as in two other cities that are yet to be determined.
