Sunday: Red Bull and Vettel could hardly hope for better
Starting behind the two Mercedes, the Red Bull drivers knew that gaining positions during the race would be difficult and were satisfied with the one gained in the pits, at the expense of Lewis Hamilton. Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber regret that their excellent starts could not come to fruition.
Sebastian Vettel – 2nd:
Overall, I am happy and satisfied with the result; we know it’s very difficult to overtake here. Congratulations to Nico, he did a very good job and controlled the race very well; I think he had the pace and the tires to respond every time we tried to get closer to him. I got a fantastic start, but there was no room! I think I could have passed both Mercedes, but there was no space and I had to slow down. Mark came at that moment, and it was very tight in the first corner. I was a little surprised by the slow pace of the first laps – usually, you expect two silver arrows ahead of you, but it was more like buses today, cruising through the first two laps. But their strategy was clear, and they did a very good job. It was a good strategy from our team to get past Lewis. The restarts were difficult, but we can be happy with the result. It’s a good achievement from the team; we seem to like this place. Congratulations to everyone, and thank you to all our partners: having two cars on the podium is a very good thing.
Mark Webber – 3rd:
« Firstly, congratulations to Nico, it’s a very special place to win and he had a clear weekend; that’s what you have to do here. Even if he started in front, you still have to deliver, so well done to him. For us, we knew that we would be a bit on the back foot starting from the second row, but I got an amazing start […] Seb and I had nowhere to go, so we settled even though Nico and Lewis had difficult [starts]. We’ll save those starts as references for the future! After that, it was simply about tire conservation and executing a one-stop strategy. It was predictable that if the race turned into a procession, the two-stop strategy wasn’t really an option because you would come back into traffic. We had to last long and the drivers nursed the tires: it was great overtaking Lewis in the pits. »
