Sunday: Rosberg wins after a fully controlled race
At the top of all the weekend sessions in Monaco, Nico Rosberg concluded by winning the Monaco Grand Prix, his home race. Lewis Hamilton, on the other hand, held the 2nd position for a long time but had to yield to the Red Bulls, eventually finishing in 4th place.
Nico Rosberg – 1st:
« Monaco is such a special place to win, and it just feels incredible today. It was my childhood dream to win this race, and to do it in a Silver Arrow on the streets where I’ve always lived is fantastic. I still can’t quite grasp what has happened, and it will probably take me a bit of time. Thanks to the team for the car we had this weekend, and it’s nice to show the same level of performance on Sunday and convert our pole position. The whole weekend went pretty much as planned, even though qualifying was more complicated given the weather conditions. I didn’t get the best start today, which meant Lewis and Seb closed in, but after the first corner, I was able to drive at my own pace. Then it was mostly about keeping a cool head with all these incidents, and the team did a superb job of keeping me informed of what was happening. Thanks to everyone here today and in our two factories in Brackley and Brixworth. I hope today’s victory is the first of a long series to come. »
Lewis Hamilton – 4th:
« It was a good weekend for the team, and I’m happy for everyone. Congratulations to Nico; he was incredible all weekend here and truly deserves this victory. On my side, this weekend wasn’t the best, and we didn’t seize the opportunity for a 1-2 today. When the safety car came out, I needed to maintain a gap so that we wouldn’t be delayed by the double pit stop, but unfortunately, the gap was too big, and we lost out to the two Red Bulls. That’s motorsport, it happens sometimes. This is the narrowest track in the world here, and it’s virtually impossible to overtake unless you’re way faster than the car in front, so there was nothing I could do to improve my position. But it’s nice for the team to secure our first win of the season, and I hope we can carry the performance we showed here to Montreal. »
