Sunday: Ferrari and Alonso did not find the rhythm
In conclusion of a rather dull weekend, the Monaco race did not allow Fernando Alonso to do better than a seventh position, caught between the lack of rhythm of the F138 and a desire to not take risks, while Felipe Massa's Grand Prix ended violently, as in Free Practice 3, in the escape road of San Devote.
Fernando Alonso – 7th:
Unfortunately, today, we did not manage to have a good rhythm as usual on Sundays, and I was not pessimistic about not being competitive yesterday because, up until now, things have always improved in the race. That was not the case today, perhaps due to a lack of traction, an issue we have seen before in Bahrain. This race comes at the end of a weekend that was overall difficult, starting with a qualification that left me in the middle of a group of drivers with nothing to lose. If I hadn’t cut the chicane, I couldn’t have avoided the collision with Pérez, and the same happened at Loews with Sutil. As for Sergio, I don’t have much to say; his approach reminds me of mine in 2008 and 2009 because when you’re not fighting for the championship, you can take more risks, whereas for me today, it was important to finish the race and bring home as many points as possible. This approach allowed me to get a bit closer to Kimi in the standings, and even though the gap to Vettel has grown a bit, we know that sooner or later, an opportunity will come to catch up with him. Today’s outcome doesn’t bother me regarding the next race in Canada, because we have to consider that Monaco has its own rules, with different settings and an unusual strategy, but also a place where overtaking is impossible. We know there is always a lot to do to progress, but we look ahead with confidence.
Felipe Massa – Retirement:
Today, my race ended on the 28th lap after an accident at the San Devote corner, just like what happened to me yesterday morning during the free practice session. I was taken to the hospital for all precautionary checks, and fortunately, everything is in order. I’m fine, I just have a slight pain in my neck, but nothing serious. Now, I’m going to try to get back in shape and return to 100% for the Montreal race. All I want to do is put this bad weekend behind me and focus on doing well for the rest of the season.
