A problem with Massa’s car is believed to be the cause of his crash during the race
Felipe Massa's off-track excursion on the 29th lap of the Monaco race was due to a failure of his car. This was clarified by Pat Fry, Ferrari's technical director, following the Brazilian's disastrous weekend in Monte Carlo.
Felipe Massa’s Monaco Grand Prix ended in the barrier on the 29th lap of the race. The Brazilian driver’s crash was identical to the one he suffered during the third free practice session on Saturday morning.
But if this accident during the trials was seemingly a piloting error, which, among other things, prevented him from participating in the qualifications, his off-track excursion during the race would be due to a technical problem with his car. At least that’s what Pat Fry, Ferrari’s technical director, said after the race: « Today’s accident looked a lot like what happened in the third practice session, but actually the two incidents are very different. Unlike yesterday [Saturday, ed], it seems that today’s incident [yesterday, ed] can be attributed to a problem on the car’s front left side. It is too early to say exactly what happened, and in the coming days, we will try to determine the exact cause of this problem as soon as we return to Maranello. »
Moreover, despite the violence of the crash and the fact that Felipe Massa spent a long time with the circuit’s rescuers, Scuderia Ferrari insisted that the participation of its Brazilian driver in the next Grand Prix in Canada was not in question: « Fortunately, despite the impact’s violence, he is doing very well and has already returned home. I believe that in a few days, he will be back to full fitness and ready for the race in Montreal. » said Stefano Domenicali, team director of the reds.
