Saturday: The Caterham seems competitive in Canada
Charles Pic had a good qualifying session, and even if it wasn't quite the case for Giedo van der Garde, both Caterham drivers are confident for the race because they know they have a good car.
Charles Pic – 20th and 18th:
« It has been a rather good day for me. We changed our plan during free practice 3 when the session was delayed and continued the progress made yesterday with a good balance for qualifying. It worked well in Q1 because I had a car with which I could attack and finished ahead of a Lotus and both Marussia, meaning we achieved our goal of the day. I think the race is going to be very interesting. We haven’t run in the temperatures we expect to have tomorrow yet, so we don’t know how the tires will degrade, but we found a good balance yesterday on the long runs with both types of dry tires, and we still have a lot of tire sets available, so we might try something different with the strategy. Even though the track is difficult regarding tire wear, we have been able to manage them well, and that gives us options for the race which we will work on tonight. »
Giedo van der Garde – 18th and 22nd [21st on the grid]:
The free practice 3 sessions were good for me, even though they were obviously short, but we found a balance for the qualifying on intermediates and managed to do a few laps with the super softs at the end. After a good free practice 3, qualifying didn’t go as planned. We went out early on intermediates, among the first on track, and the times started to drop with the dry line appearing, but it was never enough for dry tires like it was in Monaco at the last race. We came in to put on a new set of intermediates a few minutes before the end, but then, on my fastest lap, I made a big mistake costing me 1.5 seconds, and then on my last lap, I had to slow down due to a yellow flag, which meant I couldn’t set a representative time. It’s a shame because the car felt good and I really enjoy this circuit, especially in these sorts of conditions, but we know we have a good race pace, so we’re putting today behind us and focusing on Sunday.
