Two-place grid penalty for Ricciardo and Räikkönen
Kimi Räikkönen and Daniel Ricciardo each received a two-place grid penalty for the 2013 Canadian Grand Prix of Formula 1 for their position at the end of the pit lane after the deployment of the red flag in Q2.
Following Felipe Massa’s accident in Q2, the race management decided to deploy a red flag with only one minute and 59 seconds remaining in this second part of the qualifying session.
Once the session resumption schedule was communicated by the FIA – Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile, all the drivers hurried to the end of the pit lane to be the first on track. This resulted in a traffic jam with drivers lining up three abreast at the red light.
Following this situation, five drivers were summoned by the stewards at the Canadian Grand Prix: Kimi Räikkönen, Daniel Ricciardo, Jean-Eric Vergne, Sergio Pérez, and Pastor Maldonado. While the last three mentioned were not penalized, Räikkönen and Ricciardo were. Both men received a two-place grid penalty for not lining up during the Q2 restart.
Räikkönen, who had set the 9th fastest time, will start from 10th place, while Ricciardo, who had set the 10th fastest time, will start from 11th place – each of the two drivers loses only one place as the FIA decided to apply Kimi Räikkönen’s penalty followed by Daniel Ricciardo’s. These penalties only benefit Nico Hülkenberg, who qualified 11th but will ultimately start from 9th place on the grid on Sunday in Montreal.
