Sunday: Alonso on the podium, Massa in the points for Ferrari
The Ferrari team once again managed to maximize its performance after mediocre qualifications. Fernando Alonso achieved a very nice result by climbing to the second step of the podium, and Felipe Massa, starting from the back of the grid, scored precious points for his team after a solid race.
Fernando Alonso – 2nd:
« At the end of this very complicated weekend, this second place feels like a victory because we were competitive and fought with the leading drivers. You never feel in danger with them because, even if you’re driving at 320 km/h, they have the intelligence and experience necessary to leave you a safety margin. The two overtakes on the Mercedes had a similar dynamic, although the one on Hamilton was more intense because we were running at the same pace. With Rosberg, I knew it was only a matter of laps thanks to my advantage of having Medium tires while he was on Super Softs. In terms of points, it’s a great result, now we only have Vettel ahead of us who was untouchable here and deserves the victory. Even though he increased his lead at the top of the championship, the season is still long and there will be plenty of opportunities to catch up. I don’t know if I could have done better if I had started higher on the grid. Qualifying, even in the rain, is our weak point and we absolutely have to improve. We are working very hard on this issue. »
Felipe Massa – 8th:
I’m very happy with my race today, which was a real battle from start to finish. After my off-track excursion yesterday, I knew it wouldn’t be easy starting sixteenth, but I also knew I had a good car and I raced aggressively, making a lot of overtakes. However, due to a graining issue, I lost quite a bit of time behind Adrian Sutil’s Force India. That’s why I think a strategy involving two sets of Medium tires might have ultimately gained me one or two more places. Even though I’m not satisfied with this result, it’s still a positive day where we demonstrated that we had good pace and could fight. Now I’m looking forward to the next race and feeling quite confident as Silverstone is similar to Shanghai and Barcelona where our car has performed well.
