Sunday: Alonso gains valuable points for Ferrari
While the Scuderia had gambled on an alternate strategy in qualifying, only Fernando Alonso managed to deliver in the race, finishing just eight seconds behind the day's winner. However, the Spaniard lost points to Sebastian Vettel in the championship, as did Ferrari to Lotus with Felipe Massa's early race retirement.
Fernando Alonso – 4th
« It was a difficult race, we weren’t very fast and at certain moments we weren’t competitive enough. On the first stint, we paid the price for starting on used tires, as by the twelfth lap, they were already nearly destroyed, which cost us some of the advantage we hoped for with this strategic choice. Even though we hoped to finish on the podium, finishing less than eight seconds behind Vettel from eighth place is an encouraging result. The team is doing its best to make our car more competitive and after approaching several races without being sure about our new parts, today we can say that we have erased many of our doubts. We also understood which areas we need to focus on for future developments. When we arrived here on Thursday, the tests at Silverstone didn’t seem so important since the race drivers only had to test the tires, but after hearing what the FIA had to say, it was confirmed that we could test new parts and that is, therefore, a much better proposition. If I’m called by the team, I’m ready to go. »
Felipe Massa – Retirement
« I am really disappointed with what happened, especially since the rest of the weekend had gone well. At the beginning of the fourth lap, when I was on the straight, as soon as I braked, the rear wheels locked up and I couldn’t prevent the car from spinning. When the car finally stopped, I was stuck in fifth gear, and the car kept stalling. It’s really bizarre that it got stuck like that, although until now, the team hasn’t found anything unusual. The mediums didn’t seem to have the expected pace after Friday’s free practice, but maybe other factors, like high temperatures, came into play and made the difference. Now I want to focus on the next race for which I plan to do my best to change things. »
