Sunday: Hamilton makes his Mercedes shine
While everyone expected the Mercedes performance to fade once the starting lights went out, Lewis Hamilton managed to open up a considerable gap on his closest rivals, before expertly managing his tires to ultimately claim victory. Nico Rosberg, on the other hand, faced bad luck during the first lap, before being forced to retire due to engine issues.
Lewis Hamilton – Winner:
What a great weekend! We didn’t expect this coming here, and I said last night that I would need a miracle to win today. Well, maybe that’s what happened. The team provided the strategy, and the pit stops were good, and after that, it was just a matter of maintaining the gap. I had a few moments where I really had to fight today, with Jenson and Mark, and I think we had the pace today. The team did an exceptional job: we’ve worked so hard to understand these tires and find the balance point today. I have a lot of hope that this could be a real turning point for us given how it was going with these high track temperatures. I wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone in the team here and at our factories in Brackley and Brixworth. Teamwork brought today’s result, and I couldn’t be happier.
Nico Rosberg – 19th (retired due to engine failure):
Today was a good day for the team, for Lewis, and a brilliant job by everyone here and everyone at the factory. Unfortunately, my weekend didn’t go as well, and it’s a shame we couldn’t finish with both cars today. I had a good start, but then Felipe and I touched in the first lap, which is unlucky given that I was ahead and had left space for him, but his front wing touched my rear tire. That cost me a few positions and it’s really difficult to regain them on this track. Then, my day ended too early with the engine failure. However, there are many positive things for us to take away as a team from this weekend, and now I look forward to the next races since we know we have a fast car, and we were able to make the tires work this weekend.
