McLaren: Button wants to extend until 2015 to collaborate with Honda

Honda has decided to reform its legendary duo with McLaren from 2015 with the arrival of the 1.6L V6 Turbo next year. The return of the Japanese engine manufacturer is making some envious, particularly internally within the team.

Button, whose future at McLaren is not yet assured, it seems, hopes to extend with the Woking team to work with Honda upon its return – and thus reconnect with a manufacturer with whom he raced between 2003 and 2008 at BAR Honda and then Honda Racing, as he stated at Monza quoted by Reuters: « I want to be there in 2015. It’s an important year, I think. I worked for many years with this Japanese manufacturer [Honda], it will be exciting to work with them again in the future. »

The 2009 world champion believes he has a very good environment at McLaren and therefore wants to extend the adventure for at least two more seasons: « I am loyal. In the past, sometimes I wasn’t. I think that if you are in a small team with which you see no future, it’s a good thing to always look for something better. But when you are in a team like this one [McLaren] with the future that this team will have, it’s an excellent opportunity for any driver. I think Red Bull has had very good moments in recent years but that will stop. I think when you are in a top team, any of the three or four teams, it’s better to stay for the years to come. But particularly for me because I really feel happy here. »

But a priori, on the McLaren side, they don’t necessarily see things the same way, indeed, according to the Daily Telegraph, negotiations regarding the extension of his McLaren career have not yet begun. Still according to the British daily, the 33-year-old driver has an option for an additional year, but for now, activating it is not on the agenda.
