Saturday: Hülkenberg pulls out all the stops behind the wheel of the Sauber
Nico Hülkenberg caused a surprise this afternoon in Monza by placing his Sauber in 3rd position on the grid behind the two Red Bulls. Esteban Gutierrez, on his part, was out in Q1 and will start from 17th position.
Nico Hülkenberg – 12th and 3rd:
« I am happy. It was a pleasant surprise for all of us. I didn’t expect that after such a difficult Friday. Yesterday we struggled a lot with the car, and the guys did a fantastic job turning things around and giving me such a competitive car today. It’s a great moment for the whole team. Such a result will re-motivate us. During qualifying, the car was getting better and better, and the track was improving too. We made the right decision by doing just one timed lap in Q3, and then it happened. I hope our pace on the long runs is good for tomorrow. A big thank you to the whole team and everyone in Hinwil, who worked hard and never gave up despite a difficult year. »
Esteban Gutiérrez – 13th and 17th:
« It’s quite disappointing because we had a good rhythm during the practice sessions this morning. It was quite surprising to get such a result in qualifying. The field is very tight and competitive, and it was a complicated session. After the free practice 3 this morning, I felt well-positioned. Everything worked pretty well, and now we need to analyze the reasons for the gap of over 4 tenths with Nico. It’s a challenge, but we need to keep moving forward. »
