The news was anticipated and it is now official: Sergio Pérez will no longer be a McLaren driver in 2014. He announced it on Twitter.
The rumor had become almost a certainty. Sergio Pérez officially announced that he would no longer be a driver for the McLaren team in 2014 via Twitter. The Mexican published a statement signed by him in which he thanks the Woking team for the season, here is the full translation:
« First of all, I would like to thank McLaren for giving me the opportunity to be with them this season. It was an honor for me to have been with one of the most competitive teams in the discipline, and I do not regret joining them. I have always given my best for the team, and despite that, I was not able to achieve what I aimed for with this historic team.
I am determined to achieve very good results in the last two races, especially in Austin. I am very eager to see my people together, feel their energy, and show them the best of me. I would like to tell each of my fans around the world and in my country that I am eternally grateful to them. They have never let me down, especially in difficult times like these. I truly appreciate their support, they have never forgotten me.
I met a lot of new people at McLaren this season and made some very good friends too. From executives to marketing, through accounting and engineering, to mechanics, cooks, supply chain people, and simply everyone on the team, I am grateful to them. It was an enriching experience for me.
I would like to wish the team the best in the future. I will always be a fan of McLaren. At the same time, I will take care of my own future to ensure my place in the best possible seat so I can fight for victories.
Thank you to McLaren and all its partners for this season, you can be sure I will never give up.
Sergio Pérez. »
The favorite to replace the Mexican seems to be Kevin Magnussen, a young Danish driver stamped by McLaren and recent champion of the Formula Renault 3.5.
