Michael Schumacher’s health status: his condition “remains critical”
Expected late in the morning, the statement on Michael Schumacher's health was released, and the German driver remains in a critical condition.
Yesterday, Sunday, December 29, 2013, Michael Schumacher was involved in a skiing accident, during which the seven-time world champion hit a rock. He was evacuated conscious to the hospital in Moutiers, and was then transferred to the Grenoble University Hospital due to the deterioration of his condition. Upon arrival at the Isère hospital with a severe head trauma and in a coma, according to the statement read by the hospital’s on-call director, Schumacher underwent neurosurgical surgery aimed, presumably, at reducing a cerebral hemorrhage resulting from his fall.
A new update on the health status of the Red Baron was expected late morning from the Grenoble University Hospital: the doctors who operated on Michael Schumacher, notably Professors Chabarde and Payen, indicated that he remains in a critical condition. Despite the evacuation of the cerebral hematoma following his fall, diffuse cerebral lesions were found after the operation. The German is in an artificial coma to minimize external stimuli and optimize brain oxygenation. The doctors stated that they cannot make any predictions about Michael Schumacher’s future.
Questioned about the fall, the doctors indicated that the impact had occurred at a fairly high speed, on the right side of the head. The helmet was not sufficient but without it, he would not have made it to [the Grenoble hospital].
Update at 1:09 PM: Sabine Kehm, the manager of Michael Schumacher, read a statement from the family of the German champion: « We want to thank the medical team who, we know, are doing everything possible to help Michael. We also thank people around the world who have expressed their sympathy and sent their best wishes for Michael’s recovery. We would like to ask the media to respect our privacy and that of our friends and thank them for their support. »
Update at 18:10: according to Sky Sports, no news on Michael Schumacher’s health status will be released before Tuesday, December 31st.
