Official: Kobayashi returns to his seat, Merhi to experience FP1 at Caterham F1
After giving up his seat to Andre Lotterer during the Belgian Grand Prix, Kamui Kobayashi will reclaim it for the Italian GP in Monza. Roberto Merhi will participate in the first free practice sessions.
Following Andre Lotterer’s refusal to participate in the Italian Grand Prix without being able to compete in all the free practice sessions, Caterham F1 was forced to recall Kamui Kobayashi. The Japanese driver is thus back in Monza to reform the team’s driver duo from the beginning of the season alongside Marcus Ericsson.
« I work with Caterham and I have always respected the team’s decisions. Now, I am back in the car and I am eager to race again! We have worked hard and added performance to the car as well as new upgrades since I drove in Hungary before the summer break, so I am looking forward to discovering the improvements on the track here at Monza, » Kobayashi said.
On his side, the young Spaniard Roberto Merhi will participate in the first free practice session in order to help the team gather much-needed funds. He is very happy about this opportunity: « I am delighted to take part in my first free practice session in Formula 1, and I want to thank Caterham for this opportunity; it’s something I’ve wanted for a long time. I have been working very closely with the team over the past few weeks and I feel ready for this opportunity; Friday will be a very special day for me and one that I will never forget. »
