The FIA officially limits radio communications in F1
Through a technical directive, the FIA has chosen to limit radio communications from the pit to the car, prohibiting any conversation related to the performance of the car or the driver.
Radio communications are likely to be disrupted in F1 as the FIA has, through a technical directive, decided to tighten its interpretation of the regulations regarding article 20.1 of the 2014 Sporting Regulations: « The drivers must drive the cars alone and unaided. »
Charlie Whiting, the delegate of the International Automobile Federation, explained in this directive that: « In order to ensure that the provisions of Article 20.1 of the F1 Sporting Regulations are respected at all times, we are rigorously enforcing this regulation with immediate effect. From now on, no conversation from the pits to the driver can include any information related to the performance of the car or the driver, » reports journalist Adam Cooper.
Communications about gaps or strategy will of course remain, just like the messages from the drivers to the pit wall, which are now part of the F1 spectacle when broadcasted. Moreover, nothing will prevent using the pit wall boards to convey some information.
The directive takes the opportunity to remind of another point of the regulation: « The transmission of data from the pit to the car is specifically prohibited by Article 8.5.2 of the F1 Technical Regulations. »
