Button: “I’m not finished yet!”
Uncertain about his future, Jenson Button believes he still has a lot to offer to Formula 1 and McLaren. The Woking team is expected to announce the names of its two main drivers for the next season in the coming days.
Fernando Alonso has not yet been officially announced by McLaren for 2015, but the mystery should not last much longer. The Spaniard hinted after the race on Sunday in Abu Dhabi that his destination would not be a surprise.
On the other hand, the name of his teammate is not yet known, and the situation should be resolved between the two current holders, Jenson Button and Kevin Magnussen, or the Belgian test driver, Stoffel Vandoorne. Ron Dennis has stated that he would like to make Magnussen the new Danish star of Formula 1. But Jenson Button’s results this year speak for themselves.
The Briton has single-handedly carried a very inconsistent McLaren team by delivering races often better than what his car could allow. He intends to rely on this to convince his employers to keep him next year: « No matter what happens next year with my career, I have done the maximum I could on the track, and it has been a pleasure to be able to say that McLaren has been my home for five years. I would like to thank all the people who have supported me during these years, and especially for the strength they have given me this year. »
What might seem like a farewell is actually not, as the 2009 world champion wishes to extend his adventure in Formula 1, as he declares loudly: “I’m not finished yet! There are still many things I have to achieve in this sport.”
The decision regarding McLaren’s driver duo for the 2015 season is not expected to be known before the beginning of December.
