Mateschitz considers leaving F1 if Red Bull no longer wins
The owner of the Red Bull and Toro Rosso teams, Dietrich Mateschitz, is considering withdrawing from Formula 1 if he is no longer able to win races and championships. He is putting pressure on Renault to ensure that the French engine manufacturer provides guarantees of competitiveness.
Since the beginning of the season, the Red Bull team hasn’t been in the best form. It is even regularly outpaced by its little sister, Toro Rosso, despite also being at the center of takeover rumors, notably by the engine manufacturer Renault.
Annoyed by the situation after four years of uninterrupted success, Dietrich Mateschitz, the owner of the energy drink brand, confided through the Austria Press Agency about his intention to leave Formula 1 if victory was impossible: “We will remain in Formula 1 only if we have a competitive team, and we need a competitive power unit for that. If we don’t have it, we can still have the best car and the best drivers, but we will never have the opportunity to fight for victory.”
Once again, Red Bull is putting pressure on Renault to ensure that the French engine supplier makes efforts to improve its competitiveness, often criticized at the beginning of the season: « Of course, Renault can also consider several options, such as withdrawal, for example. As a manufacturer, it is your duty to produce a competitive power unit. If you manage to do it, that’s great, but if for any reason you can’t, then you must withdraw. So the consequences for us would also be clear. We are not car manufacturers who can justify our investment, so we rely on Renault to close the gap with Ferrari and, especially, Mercedes. »
