Alonso’s brake issues caused by a visor tear-off
McLaren revealed today that the brake problems experienced by Fernando Alonso during the Spanish Grand Prix were caused by a visor tear-off that lodged itself in the right rear brake of the Spaniard's MP4-30.
In Formula 1, mechanical problems sometimes have amusing explanations. The McLaren team has just revealed that the brake issues leading to Fernando Alonso’s retirement on Sunday at the Spanish Grand Prix were caused by a tear-off visor protector, which got lodged in the right rear wheel of the MP4-30, preventing the brake from functioning properly.
After his retirement, the double world champion spoke about his race and his rather eventful pit stop: « I had no brakes left, I thought the rear discs had stopped working. My pit stop was a rather scary moment. I had no brakes at all during that lap and even less during the stop. Fortunately, I didn’t injure anyone. »
This is Fernando Alonso’s second retirement with McLaren in four Grand Prix held this season. The Monaco race in two weeks could be one of the only chances for the team to grab some points in this difficult start to the season.
